Thinking about getting a new digital camera, that would be just as inspiring as a vintage film camera

My Olympus OM-1 is like a magic wand for me that leads me towards good photos. I just don’t get the same mojo with my digital camera. My digital setup consists of Canon EOS M3 at the moment. In theory it is a very good camera and has 90% the features that I’m looking for. For some reason though it just doesn’t inspire me and feels more like a tool. It feels like walking around with a Black & Decker power drill and no matter how much I walk about with it, I’m not able to get sufficient photos.

My film SLR on the other hand has a different effect on me. John Free said something yet again brilliant on one of his YouTube videos. He said that his camera pulls him towards subjects. I get what he’s saying, because when I take my Olympus, I feel inspired and I want to shoot it so badly. It kind of feels like it is pulling me towards subjects. It is hard to pin point what exactly causes this feeling, but I’m wondering whether it would be possible to achieve the same kind of relationship with a digital camera too. I’ve heard so much good about Fujifilm X-series cameras and I’m really tempted to swap my EOS M3 for something like a Fuji X100. It appears to be a very inspiring camera and reminds a lot of a film camera. My spider sense is telling me that it would be a kind of camera that I’d want to take with me, which is something I don’t get with my EOS M3.

But I don’t know. Do I have a legit reason to swap? Maybe I just have gear acquisition syndrome (GAS) and just not thinking rationally. EOS M3 definitely has it’s strengths and benefits over X100 and over all it is probably a more versatile camera. EOS M3 has been a good workhorse. I mean I’ve done some actual client work with it from stills to video and I don’t see my self doing legit video work for a client with X100. I’m suspicious about my motives. Am I drooling over a Fuji just because it would look cool? If I’d afford, I would just get both of the cameras. So far I’m stuck with EOS M3 and it feels like I’m wasting money because I don’t use it as much as it deserves. If an opportunity arrives, I will most likely snap and swap at some point. Switching doesn’t never guarantee anything though. I have a fantasy about shooting more digital if I’d only have this or that camera, but who knows whether those expectations meet reality. I might just as well be put off by the disadvantages of the new camera that I’m not yet aware of.

Oh well, at least I have my OM-1 which is almost everything I want from a camera so I should be a happy camper for the time being.
