Let’s get things straight

Today’s topic isn’t about photography or cameras, but Facebook. Yesterday I posted an image, that caused much confusion and heated discussion. As a response to the whole matter, I thought I’d share a quick write-up. 

Long story short, I posted a joke comparing the differences between an SLR camera and a rangefinder. The so called claim in the pic was absurdly wrong, to the extent that is hard to believe someone could actually take it seriously, after giving it some though for few seconds (especially if you know something about cameras). I’d like to believe that most people got it, but rest assured, there was an angry mob of fellow photographers forming, coming after me for spreading misinformation and fake news.

Not all jokes are for everyone, but there’s still no reason to go mental

Okay, maybe this is an easy joke to miss. After all, I didn’t include a trigger warning or an underlining notification, indicating the humorous approach, but in all honesty, this is an equivalent of accusing someone of fake news over a cat meme. Many people got offended, even though the subject of the joke was a camera, not for example a real person, different culture, religion or some other sensitive topic, that typically can be considered offensive or inappropriate when joked about. In the future, I’ll make sure to remember that a camera is not a joke.

A big thank you to few of you who took the trouble of leaving my page a negative review. Much appreciated guys. They’ll be a fair warning to new followers who may not appreciate tongue-in-cheek content. I’ll try to return the favour somehow. 

For example Ryan noticed that my page is actually full of false news and misleading articles. I don’t know how many articles he read, but I’m assuming most of them, since he noticed that it is full of this kind of stuff. One correction how ever, I haven’t written any actual news. Ever. (Except perhaps this very post.) But thank you, it’s good to let people know what to expect.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to remind you that Attempts at 35mm does indeed contain humour™, laid back writing and even personal opinions. There’s a reason why the commenting is disabled here. I’m having serious thoughts about deleting the Facebook page or at least disabling the commenting on it too.

The online discussion culture, that we are witnessing these days, is a disaster! Facebook groups are becoming a literal sewer of online comments. I run this blog for FUN and expect nothing in return. There’s no ads or affiliate links. The Facebook page serves as a feed for following up on new articles, plus occasional fun and games. If this level of hate persists, and the intolerance for moderate sarcasm and humour cannot be taken like sensible adults, I’m not interested in maintaining the page anymore. It would be shame to lose it, as some people actually appreciate my work and could use a channel where to see whenever new content is published. 

Let’s try to behave and not take everything too seriously, ok?
